Spain Painting Studio

While waiting for the mountain paintings to dry I worked in this beautiful studio. I wanted to capture the “spirit” of the studio…the Flowing curtains, the view outside and the symmetry and balance of the room. This is, my dream studio!

Spain Monserrat Mountains

This the (almost) final painting of the Monserrat mountains. It required a daily mountain uphill hike in 100 degree weather. I wanted to show movement in the composition. There is realism and a bit of surrealism. A change in my normal style.

Spain Mountain Top @ 180 Degrees

August 10, 2016

/ Michelle

After painting the Monserrat mountains where I was standing for 3 weeks,  I grew weary so I turned around and this was the opposite view of the Village behind me in the evening. The lighting was magical, so I focused on the drama of the light and shadows instead of small colors.

The painting studio at Can Serrat.
I would rather work outside however if it rains this was a beautiful 2nd choice.

The first layer

spain studio - 1 (1)

After the drawing is finished I begin painting layer 1.  I try to get at east 3 layers on each painting. I was painting pretty fast without any outside interruptions. Everyday basically boils down to 2 questions- !. What do I want to accomplish on my painting today and #2 what am I going to eat. This simplicity and isolation allowed me to focus on producing 3 paintings.

day 1 - 1

July 6, 2016 Looking forward to my month long  International Art Residency at Cans Serrat at the base of the Monserrat mountains near Barcelona, Spain. This is special opportunity to focus on painting and also to work with 12 very talented artist and writers from around the world. We all have studios and presentations weekly.

The first day is the hardest and the most exciting. Hunting and exploring for right location when you don’t know the area. This spot requires me to hike up a mountain with my equipment everyday, to get to this spot.  There were endless possibilities in the beautiful Monserrat Mountains.

Monserrat Drawing 1

Monserrat Drawing 1

July 6, 2016

The drawing is tough, it’s the skeleton of the landscape. A bad drawing can mean a bad painting. My goal here is to create a design based on what I’m observing.
